If you want to change your life, start by changing your habits. Not tomorrow, not next week or month, but NOW.
It sounds simple, even cliché, but its truth wrapped in wisdom. Our habits quietly shape our future long before our goals ever come to life. They are the behind‑the‑scenes architects of our success, our confidence, and the leader, manager, coach, player, parent you become, these habits drive our goals.
Here’s the beautiful part: habits are free. 100% FREE…Just like goals, no one can take them from you. But they do require something valuable, intentionality!
“Get into the habit of asking yourself “Does this support the life I’m trying to create”
The Battle Between Productive and Unproductive Habits
We live in a world flooded with distractions. Notifications, endless entertainment, information overload, it’s arguably more than any generation before us has ever had to manage. Not all distractions are created equally. Some numb us. Some slow us down. Some quietly steal the best parts of our potential without us realizing it.
Unproductive habits rarely feel “bad” in the moment. They feel easy. Comfortable. Familiar. That’s why they stick around. We let them. For clarity here…they can become “blind spots.”
Take a closer look at a few:
· Mindless screen time
· Negative self-talk
· Reacting instead of responding
· Overcommitting
· Avoiding difficult conversations
· Poor sleep habits
· Poor eating habits
· Pornography
· Alcohol
· Drugs
· Avoiding feedback
· Not setting boundaries
· Gossip or negative talk
· Not staying active
· Comparison
· Etc….
Productive, healthy habits do the opposite. They challenge us. Stretch us. Strengthen us. You will feel them as you start. But they also reward us with clarity, confidence, purpose, and progress.
The real question is this:
Which habits are you choosing every day?
Because make no mistake, you are choosing. We all do…
Habits and Vision: Are Yours Aligned?
We all carry a personal vision, a picture of who we want to become and the impact we want to make. However, a vision without aligned habits is just hope, and hope isn’t a strategy. Is what YOU do a habit or a hobby?
Ask yourself:
Which of my habits support the leader or manager I want to become?
Which habits contradict my personal values or dilute my potential?
Which habits help me move toward my purpose and which ones pull me away?
Your habits are either compounding your future or compromising it. The RISK is high.
The Real Challenge: Creating and Fostering Healthy Habits
The hard part isn’t knowing what to do.The hard part is doing it consistently.
It takes COURAGE to build habits that drive:
Excellence
Purpose
Resilience
Focus
A better way of living and leading
But that COURAGE pays off.
Healthy habits create momentum.Momentum creates confidence.Confidence creates transformation.
And transformation, real transformation that creates leaders at all levels. Remember, we cannot lead until WE lead ourselves, which starts here. Starts with something that is 100% FREE…my main goal with writing this blog is that you would be just a little bit more mindful of habits.
Your Habits Are Your Gift
Healthy habits are one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. Again, they cost nothing, but they can change everything. They give you the power to rewrite your story, elevate your life, and lead with intention even in a world full of noise and distraction.
So today, pause and reflect:
What habits are shaping your tomorrow? And what habits are you ready to change, starting now?
How can I take ownership of something that is FREE, but so powerful?
Act: Evaluate Your Habits with Intention
Awareness is the first step toward transformation. Before we can build stronger habits, we have to understand the ones we already have. The simplest way to do that is to write them down. This is what I did during my senior year of college…
Step 1: List Your Current Habits
Grab a notebook, open your notes app, or use whatever tool works for you.Create two columns:
Productive & Healthy Habits
Unproductive & Unhealthy Habits
Don’t overthink it, just write. The goal is honesty, not perfection. Self-audit. If you CANNOT be HONEST this is simply a waste of time.
Step 2: Decide Which Category Each Habit Belongs In
A habit is productive when it helps you grow and supports the life you want to build.A habit is unproductive when it holds you back or creates negative outcomes over time.
To figure out which is which, ask yourself:
Does this habit help me?
Does it grow me?
Does it strengthen my family?
Does it support the team I’m on?
Does it elevate the team I lead or manage?
Does it help my school, workplace, or community?
Does it improve my relationships?
If the answer is yes, it likely belongs in the productive category. If the answer is no, or if it creates stress, frustration, or stagnation, it probably falls into the unproductive one.
Step 3: Identify the “Why” Behind Each Habit
Every habit exists for a reason:
Some give comfort.
Some reduce stress.
Some offer progress.
Some avoid discomfort.
Some contribute to your purpose.
Some distract you from it.
Some tie into laziness.
Understanding why a habit exists helps you understand how to change it. Don’t skip this step. This will be hard for some of you.
Step 4: Choose One Habit to Strengthen and One to Replace
Don’t overhaul your entire life in a day (not realistic and not the goal). Sustainable change comes through consistency.
Pick:
One healthy habit to reinforce (strengthen)
One unhealthy habit to replace with a better alternative
Small wins create big momentum.
Step 5: Commit to 10 Days
Give yourself a short, achievable challenge.
For ten days:
Practice your positive habit
Replace your negative one
Track progress, reflect, adjust, repeat. Give yourself “feedback”
This is where transformation begins.
"The best part of this is that HABITS can help you grow and develop or they can make you small…we get to pick both, the habit and the result."
